Boozy Rum Horchata

Two glasses of our Boozy Horchata recipe

Remember that horchata sweetened with dates we made last week? Yes, you will want to take it out of your fridge again. I have something drunk for you today.

Bottle of alcohol to make Boozy Horchata

Origin of Horchata

Horchata, also known as orxata de zufa, is a creamy drink believed to have originated in Valencia, Spain. It is popular throughout Europe, Central and South America, and the US. However, the ingredients, names and flavors vary by region.

In Mexico and Guatemala, horchata is usually made with rice, cinnamon, and vanilla. But in other areas, it’s made from morro seeds, tigernuts, almonds, sesame seeds, barley, and more! Our version is most similar to the Mexican and Guatemalan versions. Here’s a boozy twist on this delicious drink!

Shaker lid filled with rum

Like us vodka root beer float, a little taste testing is needed to determine which liquor best suits the taste and texture of the horchata. Since horchata is a bit thinner and has a distinctly sweet taste, rum and Kahlua (coffee + rum liqueur) are a top pair. Either will work here, it just depends on whether you like coffee. If liqueurs containing coffee sound good to you, go for Kahlua entirely. Otherwise, stick with dark rum.

Pouring Horchata Cocktail from shaker

This cocktail is very easy to put together. It consists of just three ingredients: Horchata + a little extra almond milk for cream + a shot of rum. Shaker is not needed, I just want to give the photo a “pour” effect. It really works great for just putting in your rum and spinning it around. Cinco de Mayo or not, this cocktail is perfect for summer gatherings and Mexican-inspired meals. Enjoy!
