Friends! 2013 is almost over. Have you got any New Year’s plans yet? Whether you’re heading out or staying overnight, we’ve got the perfect simple drink for you: winter bourbon smash.
This drink has a long history. We really like this quote:
“Smash is an open, freely variable and seasonally flexible cocktail. There must be ice… There must be fruit in season, although you can use it only as a garnish. There has to be a spirit base…You might want to water your smash a bit or add a drop of seltzer. Basicallysmash is an amazingly forgiving and versatile drink, made to…use what’s at hand and to crush it together on ice for pure sipping pleasure.”
Now that we’ve all learned about this beautiful and simple cocktail, let’s mix it up.
It all started with raspberry jam. We call it the winter smash because traditionally the smash has to contain seasonal fruit. Since it is very cold outside and there is not much fresh fruit, jam is the perfect solution.
For flavor, we used raspberries, but you can really use whatever jam or preservatives you have on hand. The perfect match for raspberries is orange, which we use as a garnish and juice to add brightness to this cocktail.
Two things I love about this drink:
1) Has a quenchable thickness thanks to the preservative.
2) It highlights the bourbon beautifully.
I wouldn’t consider myself a huge bourbon fan (except in caramel). But the more I try it in a drink like this, the more I like it. It has less punch than vodka and tequila and a distinct flavor that is absolutely delicious when mixed well.
This drink is my new favourite. His:
Not too sweet
A little cream
Bright with oranges
Not very strong
& Very easy to make.
Make this New Year’s Eve to bring 2014 right. This is definitely what we’ll be cheering for in the middle of the night. Enjoy!
Bourbon Winter Smash
- 1/2 cup Ice (plus more to serve)
- 2 tablespoon preserves or jam of choice (we went with organic raspberries)
- 2 tablespoon Bourbon Alcohol Drink
- 1 tablespoon three sec
- 2-3 tablespoon Orange juice
- Orange segment
- A splash of club soda brightens it up
Add ice, preserves, bourbon, triple sec, and orange juice to a shaker and shake vigorously for 15 seconds.
Pour into a serving glass with a few ice cubes and sprinkle with a sprinkling of club soda. Garnish with orange slices and enjoy. Repeat for more drinks.
